We sit down for a Q&A with both of them.

Lisa Clampitt is the president of VIP Life and co-founder of the Matchmaking Institute, a book author and a professional matchmaker since 1999.

NBC New York: Who are your millionaire clients? Why do they use a matchmaking service?

Flicker: Most of our male clients are between the ages of 35-60, have graduated from Ivy League Schools and have mastered their professions. We have clients that range from celebrities, CEOs, Doctors, Dentists, Attorneys and Inventors. What these men have is success and brains. What they don't have is TIME to find their partner. Just like most people including myself, I go to professionals to have my hair done, my nails, my facials and so on. The male clients hire me to weed out the garbage and find them a compatible match. Most people outsource everything else in their lives to experts, so why leave the most important part of your personal life to chance?

Clampitt: VIP Life male clients tend to range from late 20’s to mid 50’s, with varied occupations including CEOs, entrepreneurs, real estate developers, finance professionals, entertainment executives, doctors, lawyers, among others. NBC New York: What are they looking for?

Flicker: Attractive, fun, polished, intelligent, classy ladies who posses “THE WHOLE PACKAGE” - beauty, brains and a body. Some men are searching for an athletic partner, or one who can travel, or a partner that has attended or has graduated from an Ivy League school. Some of our male clients have gone as far as to request a partner based on ethnicity from Asian, Latin, and American, etc. Some of our female clients have requests such as height, age or ethnicity, and just recently I have had a female client request a male partner who plays a musical instrument.

Clampitt: Men are visual creatures to begin with and when a man has it all, his visual expectations can become even more particular. But these days, looks alone don't cut it. NBC New York: What are some tips on dating and keeping a millionaire?

Flicker: My advice to dating a millionaire is not to be intimidated by the word “millionaire”. Remember that if one has been chosen by me and I think you are worthy then you must be. Be truthful, Be sincere, be cool, calm and collected and most importantly, have fun and be yourself. Act like a lady and keep conversations on the first few dates light. Don't talk about failed past relationships or financial problems or politics. Remember that if it was meant to be than it is going to be. The easy part to my job and to all that are in search of love is to remember that chemistry comes from the man above. You can't buy it. You can't create it. It just happens. It is important never to give up and to continue to go out and date and date until you find your special someone and remember that life isn't supposed to be easy and where there is a will there is a way. Stay positive. Stay focused and enjoy the journey.

Clampitt: One of the biggest requests VIP Life gets from its male clients is that they want a sweet and genuine woman who is not angry or jaded. Clampitt: From early 20’s to mid 40’s. They are beautiful and sophisticated women interested in having a long-term relationship with dynamic and attractive men that have proven their success within the business community, and these men want to meet women of exceptional beauty, grace and substantive intellect.

NBC New York: What are your fees?

Flicker: Men pay $20,000 and up a year. The broad range is set based on one location or multiple locations throughout the county. The women, if accepted pay nothing. We have full time recruiters working throughout the tri-state area searching for women that fit a certain criteria that MQI has established. After I interview the potential women, I use my gut instincts and decide whether or not that she fits the MQI criteria.

Woman scammed out of $15,000 on Christian dating website

A Bakersfield woman saying she was scammed out of $15,000 by someone she met on a Christian dating website. She reported the case to the Bakersfield Police Department, but detectives say scams like this often go unsolved because online identities are usually fake.

Debby Abel says she is humiliated she fell for the internet scam, but that didn't stop her from helping others learn from her mistake. Abel fell in love with a man claiming to be Larry Felix Mark on the Christian dating website www.bigchurch.com. After two months of phone calls and emails, Abel believed she found her soul mate.

"I have never in my life connected emotionally, mentally and spiritually with someone like this person," Abel explained.

So when Mark said he needed $15,429 for a business investment in Nigeria, Africa, Abel wired the money through Western Union. Mark told Abel he would pay her back in February and said some of the money would cover the plane ticket to see her in Bakersfield just weeks before Christmas.

"He was going to meet my family at a special family dinner that we had planned," Abel explained "We were going to see what reality was like. you can't make any decisions about a relationship until you meet somebody in person."

However, the day of his flight, Abel got a surprising phone call from Mark asking for more money.

"He was asking for money again and then I realized this guy--this is a total scam," Abel said.

Abel was married for 25 years, and says it's been hard trying find another man with her interests, so she turned to websites like www.bigchurch.com and www.eharmony.com. Detective Todd Brown from the Bakersfield Police Department says scams can occur on any website, so people should be cautious when giving money online or over the phone.

"If you're going to give money to somebody, do it in a contract," Detective Brown said. "If you just send money to somebody out of the goodness of your heart, there's no civil contract you can take to court if we're able to find that person."

Detective Brown says the man or group of people who have Abel's money could already be talking to others, using a different name, picture and story. Brown says the best resource to report internet scam artists is a government website coordinated through the FBI: ic3.gov

Online dating: Mobile dating spammers fined $6.5 million

A COMPANY and a businessman have been hit with penalties totalling $6.5 million over a mobile phone dating scam, in a joint case that has now netted more than $22 million in fines.

Scott Mark Moles and Jobspy Pty Ltd were penalised $2.5 million and $4 million respectively for contravening the Spam Act with unsolicited SMS messages that "preyed" on lonely hearts across the country.

One victim of the scam bought chocolate and flowers, hired a hotel room and waited at the airport for a date that never arrived.

Moles and Jobspy worked with companies Mobilegate Ltd and Winning Bid Pty Ltd, which were penalised $8.5 million in October as part of the same court action instigated by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA).

Former Winning Bid director Simon Anthony Owen, current Mobilegate director Tarek Andreas Salcedo and Winning Bid employee Glenn Christopher Maughan have also previously been penalised a total of $7.25 million in the same case.

Bah humbug? No, not really. I met several singles over the holidays who dreaded this time of the year and were happy for a chance at a new beginning. January is the single largest month for new subscriptions to online dating services. When they discussed their frustrations with online dating, I asked why it wasn't working for them.

Their number one reason was FEAR. Yes, fear. Fear has caused many singles to lie about their age to fit into a search. This isn't new. So, when a 59 year old fairly attractive male told me he said he was 55 in his profile and he wasn't planning on changing that number, I asked him, "Will you still be 55 when you are 60?" He had to think about the answer.

Most of us look in the mirror and think we look younger than we are. We see photos on Facebook from high school and college friends and they always appear older than us, or at least we think so.

I continued my discussion with the almost 60-year old man. He was concerned that only older women would write to him. Maybe some will. When I convinced him that he didn't have to go out with every woman who wrote to him, especially those that didn't fit into his search, he eased up for a minute. When I was positive that he wasn't going to tell the truth about his age, I asked him how he'd feel if a woman lied about her age and said she was 5-10 years younger. Although it's a common trend in cyberdating, he said it's a turn-off to him.

Finally, I asked him to make a New Year's resolution to update his profile. He was not going to say he was 59 as fear of turning 60 made him panic. He did reluctantly agree to adding a "disclaimer" in his profile saying that he was really 59 but looked and felt much younger and wanted to fit into a search. I asked him to be honest about his age. He said he'd try it. After all, he hadn't been successful in lying on his online dating profile in the 3 years he has been on multiple Internet dating sites.

It's a New Year. 2009 was difficult for many with the economic turbulence. The desire for singles to couple-up is at an all time high. Wouldn't you want someone to be honest with you from the beginning? New Year's resolutions. Who needs them? We all do, if we want 2010 to be better than 2009.

Dating is supposed to be a fun activity no matter what your age or experience with the opposite sex. That being said, here are tips to bear in mind if you are either coming out of a bad marriage and are in the market again, or are continuing to date till now.

Although there are no secret formulae to make your date a hit, there are, however, basics which are the same even today as they were when our grandparents, perhaps, were around. When it comes to dating, the three principles are: 1) relax, 2) pay attention and 3) be yourself. Some people may be setting the bar too high when it comes to dating.

Relax: This is of utmost importance. C'mon, it's not that serious. It's supposed to be FUN! Take a tip from the "younger" set and "just chill." Don't look at your date as the answer to all of your problems – your ills, shortcomings, things you didn't get as a child, things you did get and want to keep getting, or any other entitlements on your list. Rather, enjoy your date's company and look at the experience as a chance to make a new friend, or to be enlightened on a subject you knew little about before the date. Because at this stage of the game it means nothing, and therefore nothing should be read into the experience. Period.

Pay attention: From the first date to whatever transpires over the next few months. Remember, even though you're still "chilling," if you've gotten past the first few dates, it's time to show the other person you are sincere about getting to know them. Let's stop right here and think about that phrase (go back and say it out loud if you need to)...now ask yourself, did you really get to know the person during those first few dates, or were you concentrating on your needs again and what you want and expect? This is where many of us get into trouble – especially women.

Avoid tunnel-vision: 1) how much money he makes, 2) what kind of car he drives, 3) how does she dress, and keep an open mind about his/ her potential as a mate (if that's what you're looking for) based on what you've learned about him/ her already.

This openness can spare you from wasting time in dead-end relationships, because you'll find out all you need to know about the person simply by listening to them and observing their actions.

Be yourself: You’ve heard this before, but if you still find yourself acting weird on a date, then you've not been heeding to this warning. Keep in mind that the other person is nervous too; it's natural. Meeting a complete stranger (or if a friend introduced you, a once-removed-complete-stranger) can make anyone uncomfortable. By being relaxed and acting natural, you can help your date do the same.

Dating pet peeves
Now that we've got the principles of dating down, let me share my pet peeves.

Peeve No. 1 : The guy who has to tell me all his personal business in the first five minutes upon meeting him. This signals that he's impatient and wants to cut to whatever chase he has in mind. Usually, this man is scared to death of growing old alone and doesn't want to waste time.
What to do? Avoid this type like the plague and remember this: your 40-plus age doesn't negate the need to take your time.

Peeve No. 2: When a guy tries to impress with all the things he says he owns. But how do you know he's telling the truth? And besides, when you're over 40, you probably already have things and you're likely now looking for "substance."
What to do? Take it all with a grain of salt, be nice and when the date ends, rely on your gut to tell you your next move.

To be blunt, dating is a way to search the marketplace for someone who's compatible with your values, likes and dislikes. Things like who pays for dinner, whether you meet him at the restaurant or get picked up, or who calls whom first, is basically kids' stuff.

Do what you feel comfortable with and don't let convention (or your friends) rule. If it feels right it probably is, and if it doesn't feel right, follow your intuition, which at 40-plus should be nothing new.

"Married dating" classes promise to drag you and your partner back to the days when you were tearing each other"s clothes off and conversation consisted of more than "good night" at the end of each day.

For those who find time a problem, some class organisers such as Asian Dinner Club will not only send you out to dinner after your flirt class but will find a babysitter, book you a table and even get someone to vacuum while you are out so your boudoir is ready for romance when you return.

Manoj was less enthusiastic to begin with but was soon convinced.

Our Grandmothers were much more practical people, with “romantic notions” being reserved for the silver screen or a hot cocoa while you read Mills and Boon.

Take notice of how many times he looks at you. Do you catch his eye every time you glance at him? Dating sites are very prone to dating site scammers. Generally they will prey on people who are prepared to "open their heart" to the scammer, often being "sucked into" the scammers lie. The ultimate goal of their lies is to receive money from you - often in large quantities.

The next most obvious sign of a dating site scammer will be his or her username.

Often the username will also contain a string of numbers at the end, perhaps helping them exhaust a range of memberships or registrations with a site. For example 'Bob4real' may have '001' at the end.

The Description

The personality description used by the dating site scammer is probably the biggest giveaway and sometimes the most humorous (when you have gone through thousands of profile registrations like I have, you need to have the odd giggle here and there).

Most commonly, the dating site scammer will use the following phrases or word combinations in their personality description:

They either live in a common scamming country or region (Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia) or they will state they were originally born in the USA, London, Australia etc and are currently living in Nigeria, Senegal, and Russia etc.

They will start a sentence with "Am" eg. "Am Jennifer Smith by name…"

States they are god fearing, or have the fear of god in them.

The dating site scammer will describe themselves as "real, honest, sincere, loving, careing (often spelt like that), genuine".

They will often tell you about their tragic life story or history. Often this will include the death of both parents at an early age, they are recently widowed, they have a sick child or a child has died.

In combination with their life story, the dating site scammer may also claim to do saint-like activities such as work with disabled people and students, work for a charity such as UNICEF, or even work for the United Nations.

Alternatively, some dating site scammers (usually from Russia) are very sexual in nature and desire to be loved and cared for by you and to please your every desire, despite only having read your profile for 5 minutes.

The Photo

The photo used by a dating site scammer is often very professional - almost too professional. Photos will be very clear and appear to be a "pose" by a professional model. Alternatively, many male scammers from African countries will send a passport-like photo of themselves. It will be very grainy and somewhat aged.

Some photos may also appear to be everyday snaps, but are very tiny - almost thumbnail in appearance.

The Message

The message sent to you by a dating site scammer is almost always your first contact with them.

In most cases, the message is likely to be very self contained and not just a simple "Hi, want to chat?". It will include many of the keywords and phrases used in their personality description (see above) and will often request you contact them directly via their email address or to add them directly to MSN or your computer's Instant Messenger.

A good example of a typical message would be similar to the following:

Hello, am Jennifer Smith by name, am 25 years old,from USA but currently living in Lagos,Nigeria I got my first Degree from Greemwich university, London, and am currently working for Unicef. am real, loving, faithful careing lady who is god fearing and would like to talk to you more. Please contact me on emailaddress@email or add my name to your MSN. Love Jennifer xxoo

So, what do I do if I think I have found a scammer?

If you believe the person contacting you fits the descriptions listed above, do the following three things:

Report the scammer to the dating site operator. On MillionaireCupid.com, you can do this by clicking the 'report abuse' button on the profile, or simply the contact link on the top navigation bar. They will investigate them.

If the scammer has listed their email address in their message to you, contact the scammer's email provider. In many cases this will be a free email service such as Yahoo! Mail or Hotmail. I have been a single person for almost 6 years. I have been lucky enough to be involved in a running group that socializes on a regular basis. Most of my close friends are members of this club. This, then, has been until recently, my source of dating options.

Does God care about whom you marry? Yes, says Leigh Devore, author of the article 'God is a matchmaker', which is cover story of the July edition of the evangelical publication, Charisma magazine.

Devore wrote: "Romance is one of God's most unique specialities. He brought the world's first couple together, and He still delights in arranging marriages."

Her article reflects the advice of a range of Christian counsellors some of whom she was able to interview. For the others she culled the wisdom found in their books.

She cited Michael Smalley, family and marriage counsellor, who said, "One of the biggest traps that a single will fall into, is that they will devalue themselves as a single, especially as a Christian, because [they think], I'm supposed to be married."

Smalley went on to say, however, that "My biggest encouragement to singles is, if you can't make a list of the top 10 things of why being single is incredible, then you probably will have a hard time being married. Because if you can't be happy being single, you'll never be happy being married."

God knows best

Michael Smalley's wife, Amy, who is also a family and marriage counsellor gave the worn advice that the Christian single person who wants to get married should first pray committing the process to God and trust Him to deliver.

She told the Charisma writer, "When we give God control over our lives, we're free to trust in His bountiful grace and be confident that He knows who would be best suited for us in lifelong marriages."

But, Amy Smalley, continued by stating that asking God to be involved doesn't mean that a single person has to sit back and not do anything to help make marriage possible. The marriage counsellor encourages singles to develop a list of qualities they would like to see in a potential spouse.

Henry Cloud, author of How to Get a Date Worth Keeping, is cited by Devore. He said society has so changed that people don't always meet their marriage partner in college, in their childhood hometowns, at church or at work.

Cloud recommends that if one is not meeting suitable singles in one's social circles then a person needs to change his/her 'traffic patterns'. Cloud does not advocate dropping one's existing friends and family members, but he is saying that one needs to position oneself so that one can meet a wider pool of persons on a regular basis.

The change in traffic patterns, he said, could look like this:

 Visit other churches.

 Ask friends and family to set up a date for you.

 Join clubs or organisations based on your interests.

 Join an online dating service.

The list was drawn from the book What Women Wish You Knew About Dating: A Single Guy's Guide to Romantic Relationships, written by Stephen W. Simpson and published by the Baker Publishing Group. The list is published with some of the commentary offered on the website.

Myth #1: "God has one woman picked out for you to marry. You are destined to be with her, and God will guide you to her."

Stephen W. Simpson offered the view that "God joins the relationship between a man and a woman at the point of marriage. Before that, the couple has to take the initiative. Rather than directing the course of the relationship, God wants the couple to grow and learn how to make a commitment. Once they've done that, God increases His sustaining presence".

Myth #2: "The Bible has clearly defined guidelines for dating."

Simpson pointed out that dating was not practised in biblical times. Furthermore dating is for the most part a 20th century practice. In biblical times, he reported "a person basically had one of three options: remaining single, an amoral life with multiple partners or prostitutes, or an arranged marriage. There were courtship rituals in place, but nothing that looks like what we consider dating today".

Myth #3: "God will reveal to you the woman that you are going to marry the instant you meet her."

Simpson said, "Waiting for God to whack you on the head and tell you whom to marry isn't faith; it's fear. Be careful if you think God has told you that Betty from the bookstore is the one for you, but you have no idea if she feels the same way. If you plunge in, convinced that you are on a mission from God, and she's not sure yet, it's a quick way to scare her off.

Myth #4: "You have to be friends with a woman before you can date her."

Simpson said, "The problem is that a lot of men think the best way to pursue a woman is to befriend her, while hiding their interest in dating her. This is a rotten idea and sets a lot of men up for trouble.

Simpson told the story of one of his clients,Tommy, who had frequent contact with a friend who he was interested in dating, but did not ask, and how he was devastated when she started dating another man.

Queenslanders are being swindled out of up $1 million a month by Nigerian internet scams, but Queensland police are on the forefront of fighting the broadband bandits, according to Police Minister Judy Spence.

If you've ever opened an email account, chances are you have received an email promising great wealth, romance or some other benefit in return for forwarding your bank account details to the sender. The emails are known as Nigerian internet scams because they usually purport to be from a Nigerian person seeking help.

However, scammers from other countries have also taken up the trick.

Detective Superintendent Brian Hay, of the Queensland Police Service Fraud and Corporate Crime Group, said: "An examination of 37 case studies showed that for every $1 sent to Nigeria, $1.04 is sent to other countries as part of this fraud.

The latest success against the scammers came as a Nigerian national was arrested in an international sting over an alleged internet-based romance scam which swindled about $20,000 from a 45-year-old Queensland man.

The woman who appeared to be befriending the Brisbane man on an online personal website turned out to be a 23-year-old Nigerian man, who was this week charged with fraud offences.

The overseas arrest was a result of cooperation between the Queensland Police Service and the Nigerian Economic Financial Crimes Commission.

"This week's result is a testament to the hard work and expertise of our officers," Ms Spence said.

"The case serves as a strong reminder to people that they need to be careful when it comes to online relationships."

"Requests to send money or personal information like account details overseas to an online companion should be treated with extreme caution."

"These huge losses can so easily be avoided if people think with their heads, not their hearts."

Brisbane will play host to the National Advance Fee Fraud Symposium in October, bringing together law enforcement experts in fighting internet scams.

One student, originally from Tampa and a current History major, explained that online dating has been quite a positive experience.

"Online dating has provided me with the ability to talk to the opposite sex in a way I did not think possible," one student said. "It's a lot easier, and less risky, for me to talk to someone online. The fear of rejection is not the same."

For this student in particular, there was a connection made with someone over the Internet site Tickle. The two had been conversing via email and, after numerous e-mails, decided it was time to meet in person.

After a successful dinner date, the pair decided that they had clicked and continued a serious relationship for the following 15 months.

Despite this success story, there remain a multitude of risks when meeting someone online. With no hard evidence that this person is indeed who they claim to be, it is tough to really know who will be sitting across the table at the restaurant.

Perhaps the person is mentally unstable or not an attractive brunette, but a 300-pound man named Jim.

Aside from Web sites such as Match.com, JDate, Tickle, Yahoo! Personals and Great Expectations, the Internet offers other ways for college students to meet online. Popular sites such as MySpace and Facebook allow people to access a lot of personal information, which most agree is not always a good thing.

Many students are familiar with the idea of "poking," or sending a message to express interest.

However, not everyone scoffs at the idea of meeting someone through a friend on Facebook, or through the site in general.

The second student to comment on the issue of meeting someone online was informative regarding the experience.

This student, a senior majoring in Exercise Science, found a companion through Facebook. After being poked several times â€" in which one individual person presses a button to inform another they are interested in them â€" the two of them began to message each other.

"I got frustrated with the poking, so I sent a message saying, "Listen I think you're cute. Enough with the poking, just talk to me,"" the student commented.

Because of the distance between the two, they found that the Internet, and soon the phone, would be the only way to really get to know each other.

How was it that this person from another city was able to find this student? Simple.

When online with a site like Facebook or Myspace, it is entirely possible to search through friends of friends. This person was an FSU alumni, and while searching through people who went to FSU â€" bingo.

After contacting the student and speaking via e-mail and the phone, as well as the Webcam for about a month, they decided to meet in Orlando.

"When people heard I was going to meet someone in Orlando from the Internet, alone, there was a great deal of concern," the student said. "For some reason, I wasn't afraid. I felt like, regardless of the fact we hadn't met, there was hardly any danger. You get to know someone through phone conversations, and get to feel comfortable. Well, at least that's how it went for me."

As of now, the couple is doing great. Instead of just talking, they have successfully graduated to a real relationship â€" all thanks to a Web site.

Online dating is not always this successful. Despite the lower risk of rejection, it does still exist.

The third student that came forward had a short but typical online dating experience.

It began with a simple e-mail expressing interest and attraction that turned into a "We should do dinner sometime."

Last weekend the student, soon to be a part of the nursing school, went to meet their online match for dinner. The student was prepared to meet someone they believed they had a lot in common with, but no one showed up to meet them at the restaurant and no one called.

According to www.libertonline.com, two professors from Miami University; Jessica E.Donn, MA; and Richard C. Sherman, PhD; conducted a study in Oxford, Ohio, to determine the amount of college students who participate in online dating.

The researchers conducted the study to "examine young adults' attitudes and practices about using the Internet to facilitate the formation of intimate relationships."

According to published findings, 235 undergraduates and 76 PhD students were surveyed about their attitudes toward and use of the Internet in forming relationships. More graduate students than undergraduates reported meeting someone in person whom they had first met on the Internet, and had both thought about and taken steps to meet a friend or mate on the Internet. Graduate students also expressed more positive views of using the Internet to form relationships.

It seems that the structure and values of life as we know it have changed in such a drastic way that even dating has become demoralizing.

If you have the misfortune of being a single woman over 40 in today's society, then you know exactly where I'm coming from. I think I just saw a few hands go up.

As women who found ourselves single with young children, we may have put dating on hold until our children were older, with the feeling that there would be enough time. We also held on to the belief that men would be of the same "heart" when we decided to rejoin the dating scene. Well let's just say we were in for a rude awakening.

There are so many of us who do not enjoy going to a bar and have opted, instead, for online dating as we try to persuade ourselves, despite all the unfavorable things we've heard, that "after all, it can't be that bad." Plus, we've heard of many stories with happy endings.

I hate to be the one to concede, but it seems that the Internet is filled with a bunch of grown men over 50 who are trying to reclaim their youth by looking to date girls half their age or playing head games with others. This is not to imply that all men on these dating sites are philanderers, however, some of the biggest offenders are married men posing as divorced or separated men, and others who are just plain uninhibited "players." These men will equip their vehicles with GPS systems in order to travel the distances necessary to pounce upon their current prey.

My advice is: If you find yourself having to use these sites, please listen to your intuition. If something does not feel right, question it. If your questions annoy or make your date uncomfortable, then more than likely that person has a hidden agenda.

This is only my take from a woman's perspective. I'm sure there are men out there who could identify and say that there are women who play the same game.

So in the meantime, ladies, let's keep hope alive by believing that somewhere out there our Mr. Right exists but keep in mind that no one is perfect. We should not become desperate or discouraged because of our age, but instead become educated to the nature of the game.

Brit churchgoers turn to Internet for dating tips

London: British Christians seems to have lost their touch with women, and are thus going on dating workshops to improve their technique in everything from chat-up lines to body language so that they can hit the right chord with the opposite sex.

The clergy has said that due to falling numbers and lack of experience in relationships, many churchgoers find it difficult to get a partner and are losing personal skills, such as flirting and reading signals.

So, a large number of Christians are increasingly signing up for internet dating sites, like Christian Connections, and attending special courses designed to make them more successful in turning a first date into a long-term relationship

According to Peter Spalton, known as the dating doctor, churchgoers are usually timid and the course can provide them with tips to appear more attractive.

And with the lessons, they would learn how to greet someone, how to hold good eye contact and how to judge whether the other person wants to be kissed at the end of the evening.

"The first meeting is crucial in making or breaking a relationship. The workshops are all about giving people the confidence to make their date a success. They go through the whole process of what is acceptable to talk about and when it is appropriate to try to take things to the next level," the Telegraph quoted Spalton as saying.

He believes that chat-up lines can turn out to be the key to make someone laugh and feel relaxed, but at times some Christian jokes might not be well received.

According to Christian Connections, one should avoid using one-liners such as "You float my ark" and "I didn't believe in predestination until tonight".

Jackie Elton, founder of the agency, said that the number of people using Christian dating sites has doubled over the past year.

"There's been a massive rise in internet dating sites as Christians are struggling to find a partner in church. They know what they want, but many congregations are too small or have a gender imbalance that makes it really difficult for them. As a result they are not getting the kind of experience they need and that's why they are turning to the workshops," she said.

The Rev Richard Cunningham, the director of the University and College Christian Fellowship, said that with the fragmentation of the society, many people now lack the necessary skills to date successfully.

"With the growth of the internet, people are losing social skills we used to take for granted, and have drifted away from being able to read signals," he said.

Desperately seeking a mate: Hopeless romantic seeks mature, well-rounded, traditional partner. Must be bold, yet not too sweet.

OK, so the request isn't that flashy, and it's not a personal ad. But small wineries and home winemakers are increasingly turning to the Internet in search of grapes - that's right, it's a grape dating site - and Washington grape growers are finding a steady stream of business heading into the harvest season.

"When people call us looking for grapes, they're delighted when they find out we have the site," said Vicky Scharlau, executive director of the Washington Association of Wine Grape Growers. "We try desperately not to get in the middle of buying and selling relationships, but that is one way we can post that need without getting entangled or ensnared in any business deals. It's really a service to the industry."

Washington state is the second-leading producer of premium wine, behind California, with an industry valued at $3 billion. More than 31,000 acres of wine grapes have been planted, ranking them No. 11 among the state's crops in 2006.

Growers expect to exceed last year's record crop of 127,150 tons crushed, but a cool, late spring has pushed harvest anywhere from five days to two weeks behind schedule, depending on location.

Warm days and cool nights have resulted in temperature shifts as great as 40 degrees in some areas - ideal conditions for fruit with well-balanced sugar and acid levels.

Wineries already are comparing the harvest to 1999, which has always been held up as a stellar year for wine, Scharlau said.

"The growers are looking at harvesting fruit that will have great flavor but at lower alcohol levels, which is great," she said.

Many growers sign contracts to sell their grapes to larger, commercial wineries, but plenty still want to sell to small wineries and hobbyists. That may be one reason the Washington growers' grape dating site is drawing more interest.

"They're both fun. The demands are different, but they all want quality, so that's not a problem," said Patricia O'Brien, a third-generation farmer whose been growing wine grapes since 1991 and sells online any grapes she hasn't already sold by contract.

"That site is just very good, I've found, for the small wineries and home winemakers that want to make a little wine but not a whole lot," she said. "They're often city-folk, but it's wonderful."

The grape dating site brings results. Last week, O'Brien received two telephone calls from home winemakers, one in Spokane and the other in Mount Vernon. The latter bought 800 pounds of red grapes - lemberger, cabernet sauvignon and syrah - for six different hobbyists.

Her 15 varieties, grown on 56 acres, sell out every year.

"Selling the grapes is not a problem," she said.

Doyle Hughes of Gig Harbor, a facilities manager at McChord Air Force Base, makes about 100 cases a year for family and friends as a hobby. He freely admits he enjoys the "romance" of the industry, as well as being able to participate in the harvest.

This will be the first year his Stampede Cellars produces white wine, after he trolled online for pinot gris and viognier grapes.

"We came close on some pinot gris, but we couldn't dance fast enough after (the grower) found us. We had already committed to some chardonnay," Hughes said.

Twenty-two hundreds pounds, in fact, from another grower.

"We want to move from variety to variety every couple of years, and you often have to change grape growers to do that," he said.

Ted Judd, 64, of Vin du Bois Winery in Boise, Idaho, is still searching for his perfect match.

Judd has been making wine for 15 years. It's not just his full-time job, but his passion, "my whole life," he said.

Which explains why he was crushed to learn the local vineyard from which he'd been buying grapes for years had been purchased by another winery.

"I love big, thick, rich Bordeaux blends. They can make such great wines, but not if you don't have the grapes," Judd said.

He turned to Washington's grape dating service in search of reds, to no avail. He's had seven replies - with no matches - but he says he'll keep looking until he finds exactly what he covets.

"I want somebody who already knows what she's looking for," Judd said. "I'm an older guy, so I want some mature grapes."

Someone is going to end up very unhappy, unless you honestly face this issue now and decide what to do, as a couple. Tell him how you feel, and know that he probably will stick up for his dogs and wonder why you can't love them as he does.

If you don't think you can warm up to the dogs with their current behavior, even after living with them for a while, you need to confess this to your husband-to-be. If they truly are unruly, why don't you suggest some obedience classes for the dogs? As a gesture of good will, maybe you could take them to the class yourself, and get to know them and have them get used to obeying you. The result could be two much more well-behaved animals and two owners who enjoy them. I think it would be a great way to start your marriage: replacing a potentially ugly atmosphere with one of loving compromise. If you're not willing to go that far, you'd better tell him now so that he can decide which of you is going to have to go.

Famous bachelor ends cyber-dating marathon

It's the oldest story in the world. Boy meets girl. Or man meets woman. Except that Montreal native Allan Wills wasn't meeting any women.

This was in the fall of 2006. He had moved to London to work. He was lonely, and turning 30.

Lost and lonely in central London, he started a blog, entitled Are YouMyWife.com. A married woman had told him all he needed to do was advertise his availability to the world as a well-adjusted ordinary guy, and women would come crawling out of the cyber-woodwork.

Which they did. Six thousand of them.

Wills quit his job in marketing with Jameson Whiskey and blew his bank account, going on 39 dates in 13 countries.

And now the whole adventure has all come to a happy end.

Late last month, the handsome Wills popped the question to a 29-year-old woman from central London named Claire Marjoram on Montreal's Mount Royal.

After returning last Saturday to England, they were back at their jobs yesterday in London.

No wedding date has been set. Marjoram has started a new job in commercial property development, while Wills works as a product manager for an Internet firm.

Marjoram first learned about Wills while reading an article while she was waiting for the subway in London in October 2006. She responded to his ad, but didn't get to see him until January 2007, just as Wills was boarding a plane for Australia. By then, Wills had appeared on numerous talk shows and was the most famous bachelor in the world.

But one thing led to another through e-mail correspondence with Marjoram and soon she arranged to meet him at a resort on the Gulf of Thailand. They've lived together in London for the past year.

"We purposely spoke to no media during that time," said Wills, who rejected offers to turn his wife search into a reality-TV show in England.

"It was important. I said to Cece [Claire]: 'Look, this is real. This might not work out between us. We have to see.' "

I appreciate my husband for many reasons. He's kind, funny, smart, talented and he's still here.

The latter is important because if he weren't, I would be single and you know what that means?

"It was exhausting," he said, sighing.

One friend embraced the online-dating world -- a world that has numerous specialty sites -- like a love life-preserver ring. In fact, his frequent dips into the online pool became known as his catch- and-release program. He never met his soulmate online, she instead appeared thanks to an introduction from his neighbours.

According to a woman I chat with at my gym, a rabbi at a wedding she attended told the assembled that the bride and groom had met on Lavalife. Apparently that's not shocking news, as the same rabbi told the wedding guests the majority of the people he has married in the last couple years have met via online dating or other services.

"It's rewarding we have lots of success stories, lots of happy clients," said relationship counsellor Rosalyn Dietz of Compatible Introductions (millionairecupid.com). "Success for us means relationships, living together, getting married and kids."

So happy are her clients that Dietz reports that last year alone there were 36 marriages between Compatible Introductions clients.

The brothers then skipped the dating part and started writing about their tour plans. "Our next tour will be NEXT SUMMER. We are starting our TV show next week and will be busy with the show until then. We will be going out for special performances throughout the year. Hopefully we can make it to your area but we will not be out on an official tour until June or July," the threesome revealed.

"But there aren't many intrinsically negative or positive things about online dating that aren't true of conventional dating."

And there are stories about people who misrepresented their age, their income, their job. But many people add that such deception has always been an unfortunate part of dating, online or the traditional way.

That said, Mandi Townsend, who lives in Delaware, does see some important differences.

So when I'd had one too many $14 drinks and heard one too many lame pickup lines, I started complaining to friends about my dating difficulties.

Two women who have the technique down are Beth Roberts and Karin Anderson, who recently cowrote a book called Finding Your Mate Online: No Fear, No Embarrassment, Just Love! Why did these two high-powered businesswomen write a book? Because they're both smart, attractive and successful — and they both met their husbands online. "We strongly believe that you should approach online dating as though it were a job. Don't just jump in; be organized and have a plan," says Roberts. Here are their seven top tips.

1. Just Say No

The first rule of success is to not compromise. "If you definitely want to meet a man to marry and have children, make that one of your criteria," says Roberts. And if you have a deal breaker in mind, don't compromise on that either. These aren't silly things like a hair-color preference; these are real needs that only you can identify for yourself. Now, as for the guys who don't make the cut, there will inevitably be many of them who'll contact you. And if you know you're not interested, writing out a detailed pity response to each one will just take time away from finding someone you do want to pursue. Anderson's advice: Prepare a standard reply for men who don't meet your requirements:

"Thanks for your reply. You sound like a great guy, but I don't think we're a match. Best of luck in your search!"

2. Sell Yourself

Next up: your profile. "The number one mistake that everyone — not just women — makes with an online dating ad is writing about what they want instead of what they have to offer," says Roberts. Anderson adds, "Too often we find women's ads full of clichés like 'I love romantic walks on the beach' or generic statements like 'I love going to the movies.' Offer examples of what you did last weekend, which book you're in the middle of reading, and what athletic activity you do every week." Don't be afraid to get a little personal — that's why it's called a personal ad, after all.

3. Tell Me No Lies

Many people fear online dating for the same reason: They're afraid people aren't honest in their profiles. The temptation to knock off a few pounds, a few years, or even to add a figure or two to your salary can be tempting. But resist the urge! "White lies or fudging, whatever you want to call it, defeats the entire purpose of online dating!" says Anderson. "You're looking for someone who thinks you are the most fabulous person in the world." And try uploading more than just one photo; it'll give other members a better idea of what you look like. One final trick to tip the odds in your favor: "We recommend you post at least two ads simultaneously," says Roberts. This column is for you. Welcome, class of 2012, to Case Western Reserve University, and more importantly, to our dating pool. Being right out of high school, I'm sure many of you are coming in with a myriad of different romantic situations, so to start the year off right, allow me to provide you with some basic college romantic etiquette rules and advice that most upperclassmen had to learn the hard way.

There must be plenty of you who came to college already in a relationship. If that's you, one of the most important lessons you must learn immediately is how to be diplomatic about having alone time, since most of you live in doubles. This goes for all of you singles who bring "study buddies" back to your room, too. Having a system to notify your roommate before they open the door that you are in the room with someone else is key. Some people put hair ties on the door knob, others write it on the whiteboard – whatever works for you. Additionally, asking upfront "Hey, can I have my girl/boyfriend over on Thursday night?" can work. It may be uncomfortable at first, but both single and attached roommates should keep in mind that if you're going to live with someone for a year, it's better to avoid awkward moments than to have surprises later on.

Also for those who are attached – if you're wondering if there's a secret to keeping long distance relationships alive and kicking, it'll have to stand the test of time. The key to this one is knowing yourself and setting solid expectations of each other in terms of communication right off the bat. Don't go in without a plan and just try to see what happens in college – think about how you would like to go about solving problems like "he never calls me" and "she talks about her guy friends all the time" in advance. That way, you won't be devastated if the aforementioned or anything else crops up over time.

My next little gems are for those of you who came to college single. The most important piece of advice I can give you is please don't hook up with the first hot thing you see. I know it's hard (no pun intended), but when you're a freshman, it never occurs to you just how often you might see someone you thought was just a one-night stand. For instance, if you hooked up with someone during orientation then brushed them off and now they're in your SAGES class, you might be in trouble. And speaking of the issue of where to meet people, remember that you're more likely to meet your soul mate when you keep your mind open. Your chances of meeting prince charming at the stir fry station are just as good as meeting princess charming at a club meeting, so put yourself out there and go talk to people.

But no matter your situation – don't sweat it! Enjoy your four years for what they're worth. If you find romance, then good for you. And if you don't, then that's another couple of years of reading this column! Either way, good luck and welcome, class of 2012!
